Winner of the 2024 Outstanding Secondary Student Award: Aleyna
On 4th September 2024, the Learning Support sector came together to celebrate the 10th annual MY Education Awards. Held at the State Library of Victoria, this special event recognised the outstanding achievements of Learning Support Programs, their volunteers, coordinators and young people.
Aleyna from Aiming High, Banksia Gardens Community Services was the winner of the ‘Outstanding Secondary Student Award’ for 2024. We asked Aleyna a few questions about her experience in her Learning Support Program.
Congratulations on winning the Outstanding Secondary Student Award. What an incredible achievement! Can you tell us about what it’s like attending the Aiming High program?
I always look forward to attending Aiming High. After a long and arduous day at school, going to my local community centre (Banksia Gardens), being welcomed by the volunteers and Dilini, and sometimes engaging in activities that allow us to learn about others better or have a mindful break. When studying, I found the environment at Aiming High very encouraging. The tutors are interested in what everyone is studying and very willing to help out where possible, which has made me confident in my knowledge.
What has been a highlight from attending Aiming High?
A highlight of Aiming High has to be the events organised. During the holidays, Aiming High coordinates educational events like English workshops and university visits, and recreational/enjoyable activities like ice skating and eating at restaurants. These extra events are encouraging and allow me to interact with my peers and make new, exciting memories.
What does winning this award mean to you?
Winning this award solidifies my continued efforts to engage within my community. Once I graduate, I want to volunteer at Aiming High and support students with humanities, if I can. I’d also like to join other programs or groups that focus on community support or furthering my skills. This is both to grow the community and myself and to step closer to my desired career path in human rights and research.
