CMY’s Welcome Football Program to participate in AC Milan competition

We’re excited to announce that our Welcome Football program has been selected to feature in a competition put forward by the Italian football club AC Milan and Fondazione Milan; called “From Milan to the World.”

Welcome Football will be one of six fantastic programs in the competition, representing six cities from around the world – each using sport as a powerful tool for change. The unique stories and work of each program will be featured on the Fondazione Milan website.

CMY’s Welcome Football program harnesses the world game of soccer to support young people and their families who are newly arrived migrants to Australia. This program helps these young people to build connections with their local community, develop leadership skills, and become positive role models to others, whilst enjoying football at the same time.

“Our Welcome Football program will assist over a thousand disadvantaged refugee and migrant young people as they settle in Melbourne. These young people are coming from countries around the world such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, South Sudan and Myanmar”, says Carmel Guerra, CMY CEO.

The competition will kick off on the 13th of September and each city will have one week to get as many votes for their program as possible.

Melbourne will be featured in the period 30th of September to the 6th of October. During this time, Melbourne and the Welcome Football program will be showcased globally through the AC Milan media channels with the hashtags #FromMilanTotheWorld and #TeamMelbourne.

CMY sees this challenge by AC Milan and Fondazione Milan as an opportunity to have a greater impact in supporting young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds. Through this competition, our Welcome Football has the opportunity to win a €50K (AUD $80K approx.) grant to invest in this program.

“CMY is excited to be partnering with Fondazione Milan in this contest. We have a passion and a shared belief that sport is a really powerful tool for fostering inclusion with disadvantage young people”, highlights Carmel Guerra.
