A slam dunk for young people in the West
YMCA (RecWest Braybrook Basketball)
Through a co-design program facilitated by CMY, in partnership with the YMCA, an initiative to develop sport activities for newly arrived young people in the west of Melbourne was created. It was identified that young people wanted a weekly basketball program to help develop their sporting skills, have fun and connect with other young people. Following the co-design process, a free 8-week basketball program was developed, a location was identified and two young men of South Sudanese background were recruited and trained to facilitate the successful program.
Building young leaders with Rugby Victoria
Rugby Victoria
Rugby Victoria is the governing body of Rugby Union in Victoria. A link was made between Rugby Victoria and CMY’s Le Mana Pasifika program with the intention of creating a program that would improve leadership skills of young people from Pasifika and Maori background in the sport. Beyond that, it was important to utilise young leaders in the community, with a focus on mentoring, to help develop more sustainable clubs across the state.
Embracing social sport in Dandenong
Dandenong Warriors Hockey Club
A local hockey club recognised the opportunity to engage the local Afghan community through a football (soccer) program based at the club. While building the number of Afghan community members becoming registered members of the Hockey club, the program’s overall aim was to create equitable access to physical activity for local community members through the provision of space for people to play sport safely.
