Acting CEO message: Israel-Gaza crisis
As an organisation working closely with refugee and migrant communities here in Victoria, the ongoing Israel-Gaza crisis has been deeply distressing. While the extended ceasefire has provided some short-term relief to those in the immediate war zone, we believe that a full ceasefire is critical to protect civilian lives. The catastrophic loss of lives in this conflict is painfully devastating and unacceptable.
I would like to reiterate that our thoughts and concerns lie with all Palestinians and Israelis directly affected, and the many community members we are connected with – whether young people, volunteers, staff or partners – who have been deeply impacted by this ongoing conflict. Watching this situation unfold from afar is particularly distressing, and many are undoubtedly experiencing waves of grief, anger, sadness and helplessness.
CMY remains committed to supporting multicultural young people and communities of every cultural and religious background. We condemn any Islamophobia or anti-Semitism and continue to maintain respect for human rights and promote social cohesion here in Victoria.
It is critical that Australia acts as a leader in calling for respect for human rights and international law to prevent further loss of lives, ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need, and to support a permanent pathway to peace as a matter of utmost urgency.
We urge the Australian Government to throw its full political and moral weight behind demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
